Both had African American blood running through their veins, yet both appeared to be white. As a result, neither one was accepted by either race's society. Through the book, Inabinett describes the difficulty he faced while performing simple acts such as walking down the street, using public toilet facilities of either race, and riding on public transportation. He reflects on his experience in the U.S. Army, serving three years as a white man and three as an African American. He also relates the obstacles he and his wife encountered, given that their marriage appeared to be interracial, but in spite of all his struggles, Inabinett found a way to maintain his dignity, sanity, and independence.

Depicting the conditions and attitudes of both blacks and whites, Triangular Pegs, is a profound and inspiring testament to the power of determination.
