World Family and Consumer Sciences Day Highlights Need for Critical Life Skills

Alexandria, VA (PRWeb) March 19, 2007 -- The American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) joins the International Federation for Home Economics (IFHE) in recognizing World Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Day, "Home Economics Supporting Sustainable Development and Quality of Life for All," on March 21, 2007. World FCS Day highlights the need to provide critical life skills, which help individuals and families improve their quality of life while addressing some of the challenges of sustainable development.

For nearly a century, FCS professionals have been developing, integrating, and providing life skills and research in the areas of housing and environment; personal finance; child care and parenting; consumer education; apparel and textiles; and dietetics and nutrition. In the U.S., life skills are taught primarily by elementary, secondary, and post-secondary educators, Cooperative Extension educators, and professionals in business, government agencies, and not-for-profit organizations. Across the globe, FCS professionals are working to address major societal issues, such as an alarming rise in obesity rates in some countries and a lack of food in others.
