In Social Networking Sites like MySpace, Making Friends is Key, According to New Book

Thousand Oaks, CA (PRWeb) February 28, 2007 -- When it comes to social networking sites like MySpace, consumers are in the driver's seat. Companies can reach these consumers by creating a friend network to get connected.

In Catherine Seda's new book, "How to Win Sales & Influence Spiders", premium watch and accessories company Nixon shares how it is building the company's brand through MySpace.

"Nixon's overall age demographic is broad," said Andy Creighton, Nixon's Online Sales and Marketing Manager. "But online, it's a younger audience. They don't like e-mail. They like MySpace. We view each 'friend' like an e-newsletter subscriber; someone who has expressed an interest in a connection to our brand."

In her book, Seda explains the essential steps for marketing within MySpace and other social networking sites. According to Seda, one way is to create a profile. This is a company's main web page within that social networking site. Not only can a profile often be used to link to 'friends' within the community, this page can get high rankings in search engines.

"When possible," said Seda, "Choose a profile page URL that has good keywords. You could optimize your personal or company name, your core product or service, or other keywords you want associated with your business."

In the book, Creighton warns that social networking sites aren't for all companies.

"Make sure your market is there," Creighton said. "Sure, a student loan company probably salivates at MySpace's audience. But how many college students really go around giving props to their loan company?"
